Abstract

. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common form of hair loss in men that can be influenced by lifestyle and metabolic factors. Smoking and increased body mass index (BMI) are suspected to be associated with the occurrence of AGA, yet research findings regarding this relationship remain inconsistent. This study aimed to determine the association between smoking history, BMI, and the occurrence of AGA among adult men in Kampung Melayu. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design involving 96 men aged 30–50 years, selected using multistage cluster random sampling. AGA was assessed using the Hamilton-Norwood Scale, while smoking history was obtained via questionnaire, and BMI was calculated based on weight and height measurements. Data analysis employed Fisher's Exact Test for smoking history and the Chi-Square test for BMI, with α = 0.05. A total of 79 respondents (82.3%) had AGA, 79 respondents (82.3%) had a history of smoking, and 66 respondents (68.8%) fell into the overweight to obesity class II BMI categories. No association was found between smoking history and AGA (p = 0.493), whereas a significant association was found between BMI and AGA (p = 0.001)
