The Puput Puser tradition is one of the life-cycle traditions of Javanese society, performed when a baby’s umbilical cord has fallen off. This tradition is still preserved by the community of Kluwih Village as an expression of gratitude, as well as prayers and hopes for the baby’s safety and future. Although widely known, research specifically addressing the practice and symbolic meaning of the Puput Puser tradition in Kluwih Village remains limited. Furthermore, changes over time have also influenced the practice of this tradition. This study aims to examine the implementation and symbolic meanings of the Puput Puser tradition. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a folklore approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation with informants selected through purposive sampling. The results of the study indicate that the Puput Puser tradition is carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and conclusion. Each stage involves ritual items and offerings that hold symbolic meanings, such as expressions of gratitude, prayers for safety, and hopes for the baby’s future life. This tradition falls under the category of oral folklore because it is passed down through generations via community practices and beliefs, and serves to strengthen social bonds. Thus, the Puput Puser tradition is not merely a ritual within the birth cycle but also functions as a means of preserving cultural, social, and religious values amidst the changing times.
