Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) can cause respiratory and systemic symptoms. Respiratory symptoms include persistent cough for more than three weeks, hemoptysis, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort, while systemic manifestations include fever, malaise, night sweats, decreased appetite, and weight loss. In patients with pulmonary tuberculosis undergoing antituberculosis treatment (ATT), these manifestations are expected to gradually improve, particularly during the first two months of treatment. This study aimed to determine the contribution of Curcuma supplementation to the improvement of clinical manifestations in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis after completing the two-month intensive phase of treatment. This experimental study was conducted from April to June 2019 and involved 100 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received Curcuma once daily for two months, while the control group received no supplementation. Patients’ clinical conditions were assessed before and after the intensive phase and analyzed using the Chi-Square test with SPSS. The results showed no significant difference in the improvement of clinical symptoms between the Curcuma and control groups. Thus, Curcuma supplementation was not significantly associated with improvements in clinical signs and symptoms during the intensive phase of ATT.
