Abstract

Background: Cholelithiasis is a common surgical condition often treated through either open or laparoscopic cholecystectomy. At Waled Regional General Hospital, both techniques are still in use; however, there is currently no overview of the treatment outcomes for each method, which is why this study was conducted. Objective: To determine the outcomes of open cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with cholelithiasis at Waled Regional General Hospital from 2019 to 2025, as assessed by length of hospital stay, postoperative wound infection, postoperative pain scale, and biliary tract injury complications. Methods: A descriptive observational study with a retrospective approach was conducted using medical records of 82 patients with cholelithiasis who underwent surgery at Waled Regional General Hospital from January 2019 to December 2025. Results: The results of this study show that patients who underwent open cholecystectomy (26.8%) had a hospital stay of 4–7 days (72.7%), experienced postoperative wound infections (54.5%), reported moderate postoperative pain (77.3%), and did not experience complications involving bile duct injury (100%). Meanwhile, patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (73.2%) had a hospital stay of 1–3 days (50%), did not experience postoperative wound infections (90%), reported postoperative pain at a mild level (1–3 on the pain scale) (51.7%), and did not experience complications from bile duct injury (100%). Conclusion: The study results show that 26.8% of patients underwent open cholecystectomy and 73.2% underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In the open cholecystectomy group, the majority had a hospital stay of 4–7 days, experienced postoperative wound infections, moderate pain, and no bile duct injury. Meanwhile, the laparoscopic cholecystectomy group was characterized by a hospital stay of 1–3 days, no postoperative wound infections, mild pain, and no bile duct injury.
