Abstract

The export furniture industry is required to produce products that not only meet consumer needs but also deliver good environmental performance. This study aims to analyze the environmental impact of the Dining Table Live Edge using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, to identify customer needs through the Voice of Customer (VoC), to design a new product based on the VoC results, and to evaluate the environmental performance of the new design compared with the existing product. The research was conducted at CV RQ Interwood with the Dining Table Live Edge 200 × 100 × 76 cm as the object. The LCA analysis used SimaPro software with the ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (H) method and a cradle-to-gate approach, while customer needs were identified through interviews and a focus group discussion translated using the House of Quality (HoQ). The results show that producing the Dining Table Live Edge generates main environmental impacts of Global Warming of 34.6 kg CO₂ eq, Fossil Resource Scarcity of 9.6 kg oil eq, and Human Non-carcinogenic Toxicity of 52.7 kg 1,4-DCB eq. The VoC analysis indicates that the most important customer needs are a stable, strong, and crack-free table. Based on these findings, a new product named Dining Table Sora was designed by integrating customer needs and sustainability aspects. The LCA comparison shows that the Dining Table Sora has better environmental performance than the Dining Table Live Edge, indicated by reductions in Global Warming of 2.88%, Fossil Resource Scarcity of 11.40%, and Human Non-carcinogenic Toxicity of 1.03%. These improvements were obtained by reducing wood raw material use, decreasing production waste, applying a water-based finishing system, and eliminating thinner in the finishing process. Thus, the integration of the VoC and LCA approaches is proven capable of producing a product design that better fits customer needs while being more environmentally sustainable.
