Abstract

The development of 5G is driving the need for quality indoor connectivity, especially since high-value digital activities take place in many buildings, while signal propagation is hampered by walls, glass, concrete, multipath fading, and non-line-of-sight conditions. Conventional solutions, such as small cells, are able to expand coverage but increase CAPEX, OPEX, backhaul needs, energy, and maintenance. This study aims to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of indoor 5G connectivity assisted by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), as well as filling research gaps that have so far emphasized the technical performance of RIS rather than cost, coverage, and return on investment. The method used is a comparative techno-economic simulation by comparing three implementation scenarios, namely indoor, small cell, and RIS-assisted indoor 5G baseline in an area with a simulated area of 1,500 m². Technical evaluations include covered areas, blank spots, and increased coverage, while economic evaluations include CAPEX, OPEX, total cost of ownership, cost per covered area, payback period, and ROI. The results of the study show that RIS is a viable solution for increasing indoor coverage efficiently, especially in blank spot areas, corridors, service rooms, and buildings with budget constraints. The implications of the study confirm the importance of integrating wireless performance analysis with telecommunications economic management before operators strategically make indoor 5G network investment decisions.
