Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of five Bugis work-culture values—siri’, pesse’, lempu’, getteng, and reso’—on occupational safety and health (OSH) compliance in construction projects in Parepare City. The study employed an explanatory quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Data were collected through a five-point Likert questionnaire from 280 construction workers and project personnel and analyzed using SmartPLS 4. The results show that all five dimensions of Bugis work culture have a positive and significant effect on construction OSH compliance. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.794 indicates that 79.4% of the variation in OSH compliance is jointly explained by the five dimensions. Pesse’ has the strongest effect (β=0.290), while lempu’ has the weakest effect (β=0.123). The findings indicate that local cultural values can serve as an internal mechanism for strengthening contextual construction OSH management strategies. Future research could incorporate factors such as leadership, safety climate, and project characteristics to expand the model and test the consistency of the findings across different regions and construction sectors.
